The cemetery at Gettysburg. One of the bloodiest battlefields of the Civil War. President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address here dedicating the cemetery as a National Cemetery. His 272-word speech took two minutes to deliver and is recognized as a masterpiece of the English language (written by someone who received little to no formal education). The politician who spoke before him gave a two-hour speech and later told Lincoln that he wished he'd been able to get to the point in his two hours as Lincoln had done in two minutes. Ever humble Lincoln told him that in their respective roles, the gentleman had to speak for a long time and Lincoln had to take a short time.
